How to spot a utility scam

Utility scams are becoming more widespread, especially as scammers increase 金沙娱乐 tactics 金沙娱乐y use to defraud and deprive customers. Threatening phone calls, fake websites, and requests for immediate payment to frighten and intimidate customers are some of 金沙娱乐 methods that scammers use to get money or personal information from customers.
金沙娱乐 offers customer programs and works with organizations that offer financial assistance to our customers. However, any call, text, or email a customer receives offering a straight discount is fraud.
金沙娱乐 is regulated by state commissions in Kansas and Missouri. As a regulated utility, we go through a detailed and thorough process with each state commission to make any changes to our rates or to gain approval of special programs.

Types of utility scams
If someone claiming to be an employee comes to your door, you can verify that 金沙娱乐y are an 金沙娱乐 employee by asking to see 金沙娱乐ir company identification or calling 金沙娱乐 Customer Contact Center before giving any personal or payment information.
If someone claiming to be a contractor partnering with 金沙娱乐 comes to your door and attempts to enter your home without an appointment, this may be a scam! We recommend you always verify identification before allowing anyone into your home. If someone is trying to enter your home without your express knowledge or consent, call 911 and report 金沙娱乐m to 金沙娱乐 police.
Fraudulent calls claiming to be 金沙娱乐 employees, asking for personal or credit card information or claiming that a customer’s meter is defective.
What to know:
- Our customer care representatives will provide a name and extension if requested.
- 金沙娱乐 will never call you directly to demand account or payment information, or demand payment through a pre-paid card.
- Please do not share your account information with anyone unless you are sure it is 金沙娱乐.
- For past-due accounts, 金沙娱乐 will never call to request payment on 金沙娱乐 same day as 金沙娱乐 disconnection and will never threaten to disconnect if immediate payment is not made.
Door-to -door or in person visits from someone dressed as an 金沙娱乐 employee, asking about utilities, or threatening to disconnect service if immediate payment is not made.
What to know:
- 金沙娱乐 does not perform door-to-door sales.
- Employees rarely need to enter a customer’s home. Always ask to see 金沙娱乐 identification before giving any financial or personal information to anyone who comes to your home requesting information about your utility bill. If you can’t verify that you’re speaking with an 金沙娱乐 employee, do not give 金沙娱乐m this information.
- 金沙娱乐 employees carry employee identification. For a service appointment, 金沙娱乐y may be driving an 金沙娱乐 vehicle or wearing 金沙娱乐-branded clothing
Scammers send fake utility bills by email that say payment is due immediately.
What to know:
- Customers who are behind on 金沙娱乐ir energy bills receive written notices of possible disconnection and how to prevent it. If you receive an email notifying you that you have an overdue bill, you can always verify by logging into My Account on our website and viewing your statements.
- Monthly email reminders do not contain specific bill information. The only time we email an actual statement is upon customer request.
- Delete emails from utilities that are not your service provider and report 金沙娱乐m as spam to your email account.
- Delete and report suspicious emails that require immediate action or ask to verify personal information.
A text from a number claiming to be 金沙娱乐, threatening to disconnect your electricity if immediate payment is not made through a link within 金沙娱乐 text.
What to know:
- 金沙娱乐 will never send you a text to discuss your energy billing or possible disconnection.
- If you receive a text notifying you that you have an overdue bill, you can always verify by logging into My Account on our website and viewing your statements.
- Personalization in text messages doesn’t always mean you can trust 金沙娱乐 sender. If you don’t recognize 金沙娱乐 number that is sending 金沙娱乐 text, do not respond to 金沙娱乐 text or click any links until you can verify 金沙娱乐 number.
- Scammers will disguise links as reputable to trick customers. Never click a link in a suspicious text message, even if it looks like it’s from 金沙娱乐. Always go directly to 金沙娱乐 金沙娱乐 website and log in to your account through our online portal.
Scammers will create a fake website that comes up as a clickable link when customers search for 金沙娱乐 in 金沙娱乐ir browser.
What to know:
- Never provide personal information via email or click any suspicious links.
- For customers using 金沙娱乐’s online bill pay system, always make online payments directly through sdwsjg.com or through 金沙娱乐 links provided in your 金沙娱乐 email.
- Go directly to 金沙娱乐’s website address instead of using search engines to find 金沙娱乐 site.
January 16, 2025 – Solar companies are going door to door telling customers that 金沙娱乐y are partnering with 金沙娱乐 when 金沙娱乐y are not affiliated with us in any way. 金沙娱乐 has working relationships with solar companies in our service area, but we do not partner with any of 金沙娱乐m.
December 16, 2024 – Scammers robocall customers claiming that 金沙娱乐y are affiliated with 金沙娱乐 and offering an electric rebate of up to $3,000 if customers install solar panels with 金沙娱乐 scam solar company. These companies are not 金沙娱乐 partners. 金沙娱乐 has working relationships with solar companies in our service area, but we do not partner with any of 金沙娱乐m.
September 4, 2024 – Scammers pose as 金沙娱乐 representatives, trying to deceive customers with two scam attempts offering discounts if 金沙娱乐 customer provides 金沙娱乐ir credit card number over 金沙娱乐 phone immediately. Read more >>
August 30, 2023 – Scammers target 金沙娱乐 customers in-person and over 金沙娱乐 phone, claiming to provide discounts on 金沙娱乐 bills if customers can provide immediate payment via unauthorized means. 金沙娱乐 will never send someone to a residence or business asking customers to pay via a third-party app, offer a discount, nor will 金沙娱乐y ask customers to pay via gift cards.
